Several years ago we came across a wonderful opportunity to obtain the old Whittier school building at NW9th & Kentucky. The school building is located just 3 blocks west of us and is one of the oldest and largest buildings in the neighborhood having been built in 1910. The building served as one of city’s first local elementary schools.
For us the school building is a head-scratcher of sorts. God more or less delivered the building to us in our feeble attempts to avoid the building landing in the wrong hands and becoming a detriment to the community. Don’t get us wrong, we have grand plans for the building and dream of one day using all that space to be even more of a blessing to our neighbors but we’re just not certain what that looks like yet.
We have big dreams for the 3 floor, 30,000 square foot building but as is the case with most big dreams we are in need of big help. We have hopes of continuing to use the building as a place of education, to further our current ministry of ‘proclaiming the love, hope, and mercy of Jesus Christ through service and prayer’, build a gymnasium, & provide additional housing, amongst other things.
As we continue to follow God’s lead in loving our neighbors in the community He has placed us we will continue to keep our eyes, minds, ears, and hearts open to what He has in store for the building. If you are interested in hearing more about the building, our plans, and/or how you can be a part of this effort, please, let us know! Our desire is to partner with those in and outside this community to achieve the greatest good for the Kingdom.
Below are several pictures of the inside of the building showing the large amounts of work needed to be done in order to get portions of the building in usable condition.
